Sinopsis:
Yagami Light es un estudiante que detesta el crimen y la maldad que
existe en el mundo. Su vida cambia radicalmente cuando encuentra en el
suelo un misterioso cuaderno en cuya portada se lee DEATH NOTE (Cuaderno de muerte).
Dentro del cuaderno, hay instrucciones sobre cómo usarlo, donde destaca que al conocer
el rostro de una persona y luego escribir su nombre en el Death Note, después de 40
segundos, la persona muere de un ataque al corazón. Light se mantiene escéptico de la
autenticidad del cuaderno, pero después de probar el Death Note en dos ocasiones, Light
se da cuenta que su poder es real. Pasados algunos días lo visita un shinigami llamado Ryuk.
Los shinigamis son seres de otra dimensión que usa los Death Note para matar personas
y así prolongar su propia existencia. Ryuk le explica a Light que el Death Note que encontró
le pertenece pero cuando él lo dejó caer al mundo humano a propósito, la propiedad del
cuaderno se pasa automáticamente a la persona que lo encuentra hasta que éste último muera.
A su vez, Light le cuenta a Ryuk que su objetivo es matar a los criminales con el cuaderno
para así limpiar el mundo de la maldad y convertirse en el dios de un mundo nuevo y libre de crimen.
Pronto, las numerosas muertes sin explicación de los criminales atraen la atención de la policía,
la cual pide ayuda a un misterioso detective mundialmente conocido, L.
L se da cuenta de Yagami puede matar a las personas con sólo conocer el nombre y el rostro.
Ambos empiezan una pelea de ingenio y astucia, enfrentándose a una serie de situaciones,
siempre con el fin de descubrir la identidad del otro, exponerlo al mundo como un criminal
y demostrar quién es la justicia.
